Soboba Classic organizers want kids at their Junior Golf Clinic before this week's Nationwide tourney. Tony Viola will deliver.
Viola, who heads nonprofit Grandfathers for Golf, plans to show up with as many as 200 kids for the free clinic, which will feature instruction from Nationwide pros at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto on Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Tournament play is Thursday through Sunday.
The Nationwide tour is one step from the big-time PGA tour. Golfers will swing for $1 million in prize money on the course owned by the Soboba band of Luiseño Indians. Top 25 money winners over the Nationwide season step up to the PGA tour next year.
The first 200 kids who arrive at the clinic will receive free T-shirts. Free pizza will be served after the event.
Grandfathers for Golf, which is helping present the clinic, provides free lessons and equipment for kids. Viola asks kids to leave their clubs at home.
The Grandfathers golf will have clubs on hand to use.
Nationwide pro Brendan Steele, who grew up in Idyllwild and was a standout golfer at Hemet High and UC Riverside, will star at the clinic. Steele is on the Grandfather's board of directors. Kids in the program will wear Steelehead T-shirts to cheer him on at the tournament.
Steele finished ninth last weekend in Boise and ranked 35th going into this weekend's tourney in Texas. With the big purse and chance to play on his high school course, Viola hopes Steele's Soboba Classic performance will move him into the top 25.
"This is his home course," Viola said.
"With one shot, he could launch his PGA career big time."

"GfG" co-sponsoring of the Soboba Classics's Jr Clinic was a tremendous success. In attendance were over 270 kids. The PGA provided 11 Pro's to work with the kids.
The kids were not only treated to expert golf instruction but each child received a complementary souvenir shirt, snow cone, cotton candy, pizza, beverage along with several kid oriented activities (Kids Tattoos, Games of skill and chance, Mtn Climbing wall, giant slide and a tunnel exploration ride)
The "Kid's Corner" will be open to the public the entire 4 days of the Soboba Classic Tournament.
